CARBINE / SHOTGUN COURSES

INSTINCTIVE SELF-DEFENSE CARBINE – 1

Students wanting to take a carbine class must first complete a Highlands Tactical instinctive handgun class in order to understand instinctive shooting techniques.

This eight hour course is the equivalent of the Instinctive Self-Defense Handgun 1 Course where we teach the basics of Instinctive shooting with a carbine.

The same training philosophy is used of focusing your eye on the threat while holding the carbine in the low ready position. On command, the student raises the carbine to their natural shooting position (weapon stock firmly planted into the shoulder with normal cheek weld), then fires the carbine with both eyes open and focused on the threat, not on the weapon sights. With proper eye focus and trigger control the student can shoot very accurately at close ranges of 25 yards or less with a carbine.
This course teaches students to fire rapidly, obtaining multiple hits into the center body mass of a threat.

Skills Taught in this course include:

  • Basic Carbine Skills
  • Range and Weapon safety
  • Instinctive Shooting techniques
  • Trigger control
  • Loading the Carbine
  • Advancing and retreating from the threat (target) while shooting
  • Multiple target acquisition

Students will need to bring the following items to the class:

  • Semi-auto pistol with three magazines, a holster and spare magazine holder (for two spare mags)
  • Carbine (AR-15, AR-10, FN FAL, AK-47, 6.8 carbine, Ruger Mini-14/ranch rifle, Kel Tec or other carbines)
  • 350 rounds of rifle ammunition and 150 rounds of handgun ammunition (please do not bring green tip SS-109 ammo)
  • Chest rigs or other carbine mag carriers to carry two additional loaded carbine mags (BDU side bellow pockets are fine)
  • Eye and ear protection (preferably noise reduction / enhancing ear protection)
  • BDU or tactical style pants with knee pads and good shoes for shooing and moving on rough ground
  • Shooting mat or tarp for prone shooting
  • Shooting gloves if needed
  • Ball cap or other hat with brim for deflecting brass
  • A good attitude wanting to be challenged and to have fun as you learn new skills
